The Edinburgh Samba School (TESS) warmly invites you to take part in the fabulous Edinburgh Festivals’ Cavalcade Weekend 2012. From Friday 6th August, join us for a weekend of Samba drumming and dance workshops, culminating in a big parade on Sunday 8th August: the Edinburgh Festivals’ Cavalcade.

Our special guest leader/teacher for this year’s Cavalcade celebrations goes by the name of Roddy Dickson.

Roddy Dickson tutors the Glasgow group Sambayabamba. Roddy has been studying Brazilian percussion since 2000 and has been the musical director of Sambayabamba since 2002. He is also a member of the pan-European samba group ‘Bloco X’. Roddy has studied percussion with some of the best players and teachers in Europe and Brazil including: Joe Hanson, Barak Schmool, Jean Christophe Jacquin, Jerome Boumendil, Monobloco, Serrinha Raiz (Tijuca/Estacio), Mestre Jonas de Oliveira (Mocidade) Mestre Marivaldo Paim (Ile Aiye), Dudu Tucci, Ravin ‘Raz’ Jayasuriya. He has studied rhythms from all over Brazil, with a particular focus on Rio samba. During a recent 3 month trip to Rio, Roddy paraded in carnival with the samba school Academicos da Rocinha and performed with Monobloco.

Dance classes will be led by Andrea Ewerton Shorthouse. Andrea is from the Northeast of Brazil, has studied most of the regional dances and has danced in a professional company for about ten years. She has been with the Edinburgh Samba School since 2006 delivering workshops and classes to the public in Edinburgh. Since 2008 she has also taught at Stirling University and at The PEAK (Stirling's sports village).

Accommodation

Looking for some accommodation in Edinburgh over the Cavalcade weekend?

Some of the TESS players may be able to put you up and we are currently collecting a list of all the people that can offer a bed, a sofa, some floor space etc.

Additionally, we have a pre-booked 10-bed dorm room in a city centre hostel. (£25 per person per night) Please mention your accommodation needs when you sign up for the weekend.
